May 18, 2015 – MOBILE APP HELPS USERS AVOID DRIVING DRUNK THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

(West Des Moines, Iowa) – Law enforcement has an unlikely ally this summer. With Memorial Day right around the corner, an Iowa law firm specializing in drunk driving defense is equipping people with the tools necessary to avoid driving while intoxicated this holiday weekend.

West Des Moines-based law firm, GRL Law (Gourley, Rehkemper & Lindholm, PLC), has partnered with the smart phone application, Oh Crap App, providing a user-friendly tool to assist people in making responsible decisions this Memorial Day if they have had too much to drink. The app features a blood alcohol concentration calculator which is there to help people make a good decision about whether they should drive. More importantly, the app’s taxi function gives the user the ability to contact the closest taxi company at the click of a button. “While we educate people on their legal rights if they are being investigated for drunk driving, we now provide the public with tools they can use to avoid being in that situation in the first place,” said the application’s co-founder and GRL Law partner, Bob Rehkemper.

The Oh Crap App had previously come under fire from law enforcement and activist groups.  With its “Oh Crap” button, legal rights education, recording and on-call lawyer functions, detractors contended it was promoting instead of preventing drunk drivers. The apps creators listened to the constructive feedback and decided that adding new features to help prevent drunk driving in the first place was an important update to the application’s functionality.  As Rehkemper stated, “We took the criticism from the initial launch of the Oh Crap App to heart. The last thing we want is for the app to be misconstrued as encouraging someone to break the law.”

The Oh Crap App can be downloaded for free on all iPhone and Android devices and is customized for use in all 50 states and Washington D.C.  With over 100,000 downloads to date, it is one of the most downloaded law-related applications available for the public.
