What does a personal injury lawyer do?

What does a personal injury lawyer do? A personal injury lawyer fills a lot of roles. At the beginning, you have to be a crisis manager. You have to help a family wade through one of the most difficult times of their lives.

You do have to help a family through their walk with grief and with recovery because that is a significant part of this process. You have to be an investigator. You have to lead investigations, whether it's the scene of an accident or whether it's vehicles that are involved in an accident, or witness statements, or obtaining potential videos.

You have to be a negotiator. You have to be adept and in fact be great at dealing with insurance companies and negotiations so that you don't leave one dime on the table that is due to your client. You have to be the lead of the litigation team. No one lawyer can represent a client sufficiently without a team in cases that are this complicated. You have to have staff and additional attorneys and experts and consultants. And you have to make sure that everybody is doing their part to make sure that this case is prepared sufficiently to be presented in the best possible manner for the trial.

And last, you have to be a trial attorney. You have to not only know how to try cases. You have to be a good storyteller. Because what you're doing as a trial attorney is telling a person's story, a family's story. And a significant part of that story now is how a tragedy has affected this family's life.
