Prohibited Weapons

SUPPRESSORS

Possession of a firearm suppressor is legal in Iowa as long as the federal guidelines are followed.  Knowingly possessing a firearm suppressor in violation of federal law is a Class “D” felony under Iowa law, the person could also be subject to federal prosecution.
 

SHORT-BARRELED RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS

Knowingly possessing a short-barreled rifle or short-barreled shotgun in violation of federal law is a Class “D” felony under Iowa law, the person could also be subject to federal prosecution.

"Short-barreled shotguns/rifles” are defined as rifles or shotguns where the barrel less than 18 inches, and any weapon made from a rifle or shotgun if the weapon, as modified, has an overall length less than 26 inches.
 

OFFENSIVE WEAPONS

Unless authorized, knowingly possessing an offensive weapon is a class “D” felony
Examples of offensive weapons include:
  • Machine gun
  • Bombs
  • Grenade
  • Mine
  • Rocket
  • Ballistic knife
  • Any bullet or projective capable of exploding or detonating prior to or upon impact; or
  • Shotshell or cartridge designed to project a flame or fireball
