$100K Judgment in Story County for Unpaid Employee Compensation

On August 20, 2019 the Story County District Court awarded a former employee more than $50,000 in past due wages and entered judgment for an additional $50,000 in liquidated damages against the employer, plus attorney fees and court costs, for the employer’s intentional failure to pay salary and benefits over a period of several months.

Under the Iowa Wage Payment Collection Act, an employer must pay compensation when due and, if not paid timely, may be assessed liquidated damages up to the unpaid amount of wages, plus attorney fees and court costs depending on the circumstances surrounding the non-payment.

GRL attorney Colin Murphy established the employer’s failure to pay was intentional and unjustified and, in doing so, doubled the recovery for the employee to $100,000.
