Des Moines, Polk County Iowa. A young lady was killed when she fell off of the deck of a friend's apartment after movie night with her girlfriends. After an exhaustive investigation, GRL uncovered that not only were the railings 10 inches below code, the apartment had been cited previously on multiple occasion for this safety code violation. The apartment complex maintained that despite the unsafe condition they should have been grandfathered under an outdated law. They also attempted to place the blame on the victim. After declining and offer of less than 200,000, Cory F, Gourley obtained a jury verdict on behalf of the young lady's parents in the amount of 1.75 million which was reduced for comparative fault to $1,137,500.
